HISTORY OF THE EAGLESFIELD HOUSE ESTATE

In the summer of 2005, Mr. Robert Hein purchased what was originally called "The William Eaglesfield House Estate," located on the south side of US 40 between Brazil and Greencastle, Indiana.  The former estate was constructed in 1855 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Homes.  The original builder later completed a poplar wood 3-story barn in 1898, which is also listed on several registers, and is arguably the most photographed barn in Indiana.  The barn was recently published in the 2008 Country Store Calendars (a national calendar) for the month of July, 2008.

The Hein's have been in the process of refurbishing the home, barn and grounds back to the original pre-Civil War grand style.  Daughters Bette Anne Hein-Brewer of Rockville and Lisa Hein-Reese of Indianapolis along with nephew Justin Hein or Rockville, along with their father Bob Hein, are all involved in the project.

Since the Pre Civil War construction, the Eaglesfield House has served as a personal home for several families, a way station, a restaurant, a motel and apartment house, and a totally self-sustaining northern plantation, with a smoke house, fresh water well, grape harbor, and fruit trees, and several acres of garden.  The barn at one time housed up to 40 horses and other liverstock to provide food and livelihood to the owners.

The Hein family has remodeled the first two floors of the barn into an indoor antiques mall with up to 35 booths for vendors, along with a snack bar.  The historic Livery Stable Antique Mall will be a recreation of a prior Livery Stable mall in Lowell, IN, which the Hein family operated many years ago.

In addition to the Livery Stable Antique Mall, there will be an open air weekly Flea Market, providing spaces for up to 100 vendors and ample parking on the back of the 17 acre property.

Early Friday morning, Sept. 14, 2007, Mr. Robert Hein passed away at the age of 82.  He was a WWII veteran, having landed on the beaches of Normandy in 1945.  He was an accomplished artist, entrepreneur, and a beloved father and grandfather.  He will be missed by his family, now in charge of the estate left to them.
